A recent move by the hacker responsible for stealing $235 million from Indian crypto exchange WazirX has caught the attention of blockchain security experts. The hacker transferred $6.5 million worth of funds through the popular crypto mixer Tornado Cash in an attempt to wash the stolen money.
According to Cyvers, the hacker moved 2,600 Ether, which equals $6.5 million at current prices, to Tornado Cash. The wallet address initially held $6.7 million but now only has $154,000 remaining after multiple transfers of 100 ETH within just one hour.
WazirX had recently announced the opportunity for users to withdraw up to 66% of their Indian rupee token balances earlier than expected. The exchange had originally planned to open the withdrawal window on September 9 but changed course to allow users access to their funds sooner.
Since the $235 million exploit on July 18, WazirX has been working on restoring its financial operations gradually. This includes reinstating Indian rupee withdrawals, which began on August 26. However, some legal issues with crypto withdrawals still persist, and the exchange is pursuing legal proceedings in Singapore to address these issues.
With the hacker’s recent move through Tornado Cash, the investigation into the WazirX hack continues as the exchange strives to provide a secure platform for users to manage their crypto assets.
