US Government’s Decision to Transfer Bitcoin to Coinbase Criticized by Industry Experts

Industry insiders and observers were quick to criticize the United States government’s move to transfer $1.9 billion worth of Bitcoin to Coinbase, calling it a significant strategic error.

According to Jason Lowery, a United States Space Force major and author, selling Bitcoin at any price is not a wise decision for the US. Lowery emphasized that the government lacks a clear understanding of the Bitcoin assets it holds, indicating a lack of strategic vision.

The transfer of approximately 19,800 BTC to a Coinbase Prime deposit address on December 2 raised concerns among industry leaders. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong echoed Lowery’s sentiments, stating that the US government should refrain from selling its Bitcoin holdings.

Opinions within the crypto community also reflected apprehension about the government’s actions. Crypto educator Toby Cunningham criticized the potential sale, suggesting that any Bitcoin supply sold by the government would be quickly absorbed in the market. Another observer speculated that the current administration might rush to make decisions before leaving office.

While the US government transferred a total of 25,999 BTC worth $2.49 billion to Coinbase in the past year, analytics platform Spot On Chain suggests that these transfers may be related to custody actions instead of sales.

Gabor Gurbacs, a Tether strategy adviser, proposed that the government might be consolidating wallets or upgrading outdated addresses. He highlighted the lack of official auction information, indicating that a sale is not certain.

Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant, estimated that only 10,000 BTC were sold in the recent transfers, with the remaining Bitcoin going to a new address. Spot On Chain data reveals that the US government currently holds approximately 183,850 BTC valued at around $17.7 billion across various known addresses.

The market reaction to the transfer was evident, with Bitcoin prices experiencing a brief dip of nearly 3% to $94,500. However, the asset quickly recovered to around $96,000 at the time of reporting.

The US government’s handling of Bitcoin assets continues to raise speculation and debate within the crypto industry. As the situation unfolds, industry experts keep a close watch on the government’s actions and their potential impact on the market.
