Texas lawmakers are in the early stages of discussing legislation to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve in the state, as revealed by the Satoshi Action Fund (SAF), a nonprofit advocacy group.
During a recent talk at the North American Blockchain Summit in Texas, SAF CEO Dennis Porter shared that discussions had begun with a lawmaker about introducing legislation for the strategic Bitcoin reserve. Porter emphasized the potential impact of such a move, considering Texas has the eighth-largest economy globally, boasting a GDP of $2.4 trillion in 2022.
While the concept of strategic Bitcoin reserves is gaining traction, with US Senator Cynthia Lummis introducing a bill for a national Bitcoin reserve and Pennsylvania exploring Bitcoin on its balance sheet, Porter stressed the importance of protecting Bitcoin mining in the US.
Porter highlighted the vulnerability of American Bitcoin miners to foreign influence and the need for a domestic market for buying and selling Bitcoin to safeguard against outside actors manipulating Bitcoin prices.
Drawing parallels to pivotal historical decisions like the Louisiana Purchase and acquiring Florida and Alaska, Porter asserted that establishing a Bitcoin reserve is crucial for shaping the future of the US economy.
The momentum for strategic Bitcoin reserves is also growing internationally, with Polish presidential candidate Sławomir Mentzen pledging to create a Bitcoin reserve if elected.
As discussions continue and momentum builds for strategic Bitcoin reserve legislation, Porter expressed optimism for the future, envisioning a race among states and nations to establish reserves. The broader goal, he noted, is to secure Bitcoin mining, protect against inflation, and bolster economic stability in the face of global uncertainties.
