The expansion of the Ethereum layer-2 (L2) ecosystem is revolutionizing daily economic activities on the blockchain. However, the issue of centralization still looms large. Elena Sinelnikova, co-founder of Metis L2, emphasized the importance of decentralized sequencers in layer-2 scaling solutions to enhance anti-fragility and censorship resistance.
Sinelnikova highlighted the concern that most layer-2 networks rely on a single sequencer, leaving users vulnerable to centralized control. By implementing decentralized sequencers, the risk of manipulation or shutdown of platforms is minimized. In comparison to proposals promoting L2 interoperability, Sinelnikova believes that decentralized sequencers offer a simpler and more effective solution.
Looking ahead to 2025, Sinelnikova predicts a surge in layer-2 scaling solutions. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s plan to increase throughput to 100,000 transactions per second through “The Surge” initiative demonstrates the continued growth potential of the Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem. This growth is evident in the rising transaction data and total value locked across Ethereum L2s, indicating a bright future for decentralized sequencers in optimizing Ethereum’s scalability.
With layer-2 networks like Arbitrum One and Base leading the charge with billions in total value locked, the Ethereum ecosystem is primed for further expansion and innovation.
