OpenAI faced yet another security breach on X as hackers took control of the press account and posted links to a suspected phishing site promoting “OPENAI” tokens for ChatGPT users.
This incident marks the fifth cybersecurity breach related to OpenAI since January 2023, making it the fourth reported hack on X alone.
Users quickly noticed the compromised account, with developer Benjamin De Kraker alerting others by stating, “The official OpenAI Newsroom account has been hacked and is shilling fake shitcoins.”
Screenshots of the hack reveal the hackers’ claims that by obtaining OPENAI tokens, users could access OpenAI’s future beta programs and bridge the gap between blockchain technology and AI.
The link provided in the post directed users to a website marked as “suspected phishing,” warning users before proceeding further.
As is common with such hacks, the hackers disabled comments on the post to prevent users from alerting others about the suspicious activity.
Despite the deleted posts, neither OpenAI nor CEO Sam Altman have officially addressed the hack as of now.
This most recent hack follows previous incidents involving OpenAI researchers and affiliated accounts promoting the same OPENAI tokens.
While the firm has managed to contain the situation so far, concerns have been raised about the security practices at OpenAI, with some suggesting the implementation of two-factor authentication for employees.
The recurring cybersecurity breaches have brought criticism to OpenAI’s doorstep, questioning the firm’s ability to secure its systems and data.
