New York City Mayor Eric Adams surprised reporters and attendees at a press event following the American LGBTQ+ Museum ceremony by flaunting his Bitcoin holdings. Amid wire fraud and conspiracy charges, Adams took a moment to reflect on his decision to accept Bitcoin as part of his paycheck and how it’s paid off.
Addressing a question about Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s potential role in the US government, Adams shifted the conversation to his Bitcoin investments. He confidently stated, “Remember when you all laughed at me for getting into Bitcoin? Who’s laughing now? Look at my Bitcoin now. You wish you had done the same.”
Adams made headlines in January 2022 when he announced plans to accept his first three paychecks in Bitcoin. Back then, the price of BTC was around $61,000. Fast forward to today, with Bitcoin soaring to approximately $96,000, marking a significant 57% increase.
Although Adams is facing legal challenges with charges related to wire fraud and conspiracy, he has been a vocal supporter of digital assets. He aims to position New York City as the “epicenter of the cryptocurrency industry” and has criticized legislation restricting proof-of-work mining with non-renewable energy sources.
The mayor’s decision to embrace Bitcoin was partly in response to a challenge from Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who pledged to accept his first paycheck in BTC. Adams upped the ante by committing to take his first three paychecks in the cryptocurrency.
As the crypto market continues to evolve, Adams’ bold move shows that embracing digital assets like Bitcoin can pay off in unexpected ways. Whether you’re a skeptic or a supporter, Adams’ journey with Bitcoin serves as a reminder to stay open to new possibilities in the ever-changing world of finance.
