Award-winning Hollywood director Roland Emmerich and producer Marco Weber are teaming up to create a live-action TV series based on the popular Web3 game, “Space Nation.” This exciting new project aims to delve deep into the game’s rich history, lore, and setting through a unique live-action adaptation.
In an exclusive report by Variety, it was revealed that Emmerich and Weber are taking a non-traditional approach to the development and distribution of the TV series. Instead of opting for a traditional network or streaming service, they are exploring innovative methods that align with the game’s overall philosophy.
“We want to take an approach that fits into the overall philosophy of what we’re doing with the game,” Weber stated in an interview with Variety. “Our goal is to be able to finance a significant portion of the budget ourselves through our own economy and our own token.”
“Space Nation” is a popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) game where players step into the shoes of starship captains. Built on blockchain technology, the game features a Web3-enabled environment that allows players to engage in a token-based economy with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can be bought, sold, and traded in-game.
The game was developed by Space Nation Inc., a company founded by Emmerich, Weber, Jerome Wu, and game developer Tony Tang. With $50 million in early funding, the project was always envisioned as a “transmedia” platform, combining elements of gaming and storytelling.
Despite the impressive funding and industry expertise behind the project, the incorporation of NFTs into MMOs has faced challenges in appealing to mainstream gamers. However, with Emmerich’s track record of blockbuster hits like “Independence Day” and a dedicated team of industry veterans, “Space Nation” is poised to make a significant impact in the Web3 gaming space.
The TV series project is just one of the many exciting developments in the world of Web3 games. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking collaboration between Hollywood and the gaming industry.
