Amid privacy concerns and content moderation issues plaguing social media, a new blockchain-based messaging platform, Towns, has officially launched on Oct. 15 to revolutionize digital communication.
Backed by a $25.5 million Series A funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) in February 2023, Towns aims to set a new standard for secure and transparent online conversations. Founded by Ben Rubin, the mastermind behind Houseparty and Meerkat, Towns integrates blockchain capabilities to provide users with complete ownership and control of their data.
Leveraging the robust messaging protocol River, which operates on an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible layer-2 chain with decentralized nodes and smart contracts deployed on the Base protocol, Towns ensures end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for enhanced privacy and security.
The Towns app interface resembles popular communication platforms like Discord and Slack, offering users customizable onchain features and complete transparency through River smart contracts on Base. Towns spokesperson highlighted the importance of blockchain in communication, citing its role in ensuring security, transparency, and decentralization without the need for intermediaries.
While Towns is not the first platform to integrate blockchain in messaging, its unique approach and customizable features set it apart in the market. With more people living online, Towns aims to seamlessly integrate into online culture, making it accessible to everyone.
Join the innovative wave of blockchain-powered communication with Towns and experience the future of digital conversations.
