Nature, a renowned scientific journal with a massive audience of nine million viewers per month, recently showcased the decentralized science (DeSci) project ResearchHub in an eye-opening article. This feature in Nature could potentially introduce DeSci and cryptocurrency to a broader scientific community.
The article delved into ResearchHub’s innovative platform, where peer reviewers are rewarded with $150 worth of cryptocurrency for conducting independent reviews of research papers. Nature highlighted the story of Pedro Paulo Gattai Gomes, a molecular biology consultant from São Paulo, who has found financial success by reviewing papers on ResearchHub.
Gomes shared that he now earns more from reviewing on ResearchHub than he did in his previous academic roles, with an average of 15 reviews per month, earning $150 in ResearchCoin tokens (RSC) for each review.
This significant recognition in Nature comes as a major milestone for DeSci, given the journal’s impressive Journal Impact Factor of 50.5. The recent surge in RSC’s value by nearly 20% to $1.01 underscores the growing interest in ResearchHub and DeSci.
ResearchHub, launched in 2020, has garnered support from influential figures like Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, who spoke at the ResearchHub Journal’s launch event in San Francisco last month. While ResearchHub aims to address critical challenges in the scientific community, Nature also noted potential hurdles due to the platform’s unconventional approach.
Researchers may face difficulties converting RSC to fiat currency, as decentralized exchanges like Uniswap are required to swap RSC for more prominent cryptocurrencies before cashing out. ResearchHub has taken steps to streamline this process by listing RSC on centralized exchanges like Gate.io.
Despite its disruptive nature, ResearchHub is making strides in empowering researchers through incentives like tipping for valuable contributions and outsourcing research tasks. Authors pay a processing fee, while ResearchHub retains a percentage of ResearchCoin transactions, reinvesting a portion back into the community.
While ResearchHub Journal is still in its early stages, the platform has been active since May 2023, offering a new paradigm for scientific collaboration and advancement. With the rise of decentralized science and its potential to revolutionize research practices, the future looks promising for projects like ResearchHub.
