In a recent incident that has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency community, a Ledger wallet user known as “Anchor Drops” has come forward with a staggering report of losing 10 Bitcoin (BTC) due to a phishing attack.
“Anchor Drops” took to social media to share the devastating news of losing approximately $1 million in BTC and an additional $1.5 million in non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that were stored in the same Ledger Nano S wallet.
The community and Ledger have since linked this unfortunate event to a phishing hack that took place several years ago but has only now come to light. According to reports, the loss can be traced back to a phishing transaction named “Fake_Phishing5443” that occurred on February 22, 2022.
Experts from blockchain security platforms have confirmed that the phishing transaction detected by a community member was the likely cause of the significant losses suffered by “Anchor Drops.”
Hakan Unal, a senior scientist at the blockchain security platform Cyvers, stated that evidence shows the user unknowingly approved a malicious transaction years ago, allowing the hacker to drain the wallet eventually. Although the NFT losses were associated with Ethereum transactions, it remains unclear how the malicious activity impacted the user’s Bitcoin holdings.
While the details of how the BTC was stolen are still unclear, experts suggest that the malicious transaction on Ethereum could have possibly spread to other blockchains within the wallet, compromising the user’s assets further.
In response to the incident, Ledger has urged its users to exercise caution while interacting with their wallets and signing transactions. While using hardware wallets provides enhanced security, it is crucial for users to remain vigilant and make informed decisions to protect their digital assets.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining strong security practices when dealing with cryptocurrencies and highlights the ongoing threat of phishing attacks in the crypto space. Stay safe, stay informed, and protect your assets.
