An Arizona man was recently apprehended for impersonating an Uber driver in Scottsdale and allegedly fleecing two passengers of a total of $300,000 in cryptocurrency. Nuruhussein Hussein, the suspect, reportedly deceived passengers waiting outside the W Hotel by pretending to be their Uber ride, knowing their names.
The scam reportedly involved Hussein borrowing the victim’s phone under false pretenses and transferring crypto from their Coinbase account to a cold storage wallet. In one instance, the suspect even threatened a victim who grew suspicious, indicating potential danger if they didn’t comply.
Following his arrest by Scottsdale police and the US Secret Service, Hussein is facing charges of theft, fraud, and money laundering. Authorities have imposed a $200,000 cash bond on him, along with electronic monitoring if released. The investigation is still ongoing, with potential further charges pending.
This incident sheds light on the risks associated with offline crypto theft, with a growing number of reported cases globally. From extortion attempts dating back to 2014 to recent heists like the Melbourne Bitcoin ATM robbery, cryptocurrency holders need to remain vigilant and secure their assets.
