LayerZero Labs’ CEO, Bryan Pellegrino, attributes the success of LayerZero’s recent airdrop to a combination of aggressive Sybil filtering and a focus on rewarding dedicated users. Pellegrino revealed that the company took unique measures, including a “big Sybil hunt,” to ensure that its native token, ZRO, ended up in the hands of the network’s most loyal users.
In an interview during Korea Blockchain Week, Pellegrino emphasized the importance of prioritizing real users and closing the gap between expectations and reality. He acknowledged the initial backlash the company received for implementing a mandatory donation requirement for claiming the airdrop but expressed pride in the team’s efforts to balance the scales.
The ZRO token was airdropped on June 20, entering the market at a price of $4.40. Despite some challenges, including criticism over the donation requirement, ZRO has maintained its value better than tokens from rival networks Starknet and ZKsync.
Starknet’s STRK token, airdropped in February, faced controversy for allegedly favoring insiders and failing to protect against airdrop squatters. The token’s value plummeted by over 90% post-launch due to decreased network activity and manipulation by squatters.
Similarly, ZKsync’s ZK token, airdropped in June, saw a significant drop in value due to minimal Sybil filtering, allowing predatory airdrop hunters to exploit the system.
Pellegrino’s strategic approach and emphasis on rewarding genuine users have set LayerZero apart in the competitive world of token airdrops. As the crypto landscape evolves, prioritizing community engagement and authenticity will be key to driving success in airdrop campaigns.
