Hashdex, an asset manager, has submitted its second amended application for a pioneering exchange-traded fund (ETF), aiming to offer investors a comprehensive cryptocurrency portfolio, according to recent regulatory filings.
This updated filing indicates significant progress in the approval process for the crypto index ETF with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the primary financial regulator in the United States. Following the SEC’s request for more time to evaluate the ETF, Hashdex filed its first amended S-1 back in October.
The proposed Hashdex Nasdaq Crypto Index US ETF is set to include Bitcoin and Ether initially, with the potential to expand to include other digital currencies in the future. This move is aligned with the growing demand for diversified investment options in the digital asset space.
According to industry experts, crypto index ETFs are becoming a focal point for issuers after the successful listings of ETFs holding Bitcoin and Ether earlier this year. Katalin Tischhauser, head of investment research at crypto bank Sygnum, has emphasized the efficiency and appeal of index ETFs for investors, drawing a parallel to traditional market indices like the S&P 500.
Influential regulatory shifts, such as the softening stance on crypto oversight by the SEC and the potential departure of Chair Gary Gensler in 2025, indicate a changing landscape for cryptocurrency regulations in the US.
Leading asset managers like Franklin Templeton and Grayscale are also venturing into the crypto index ETF space. Franklin’s Crypto Index ETF aims to track the performance of the CF Institutional Digital Asset Index, while Grayscale’s Digital Large Cap Fund holds a diverse portfolio of cryptocurrencies beyond Bitcoin and Ether.
As the crypto market continues to evolve rapidly, the introduction of index ETFs opens up new avenues for investors to gain exposure to a broader range of digital assets and participate in this dynamic sector’s growth.
