EigenLayer’s X account fell victim to hackers who launched a fake airdrop campaign on October 18th. The fraudulent post promised users a second chance at an airdrop, but instead redirected them to a malicious link unrelated to the protocol.
The post was quickly deleted, indicating that the hackers may have lost access to the account. Pseudonymous onchain investigator ZachXBT warned users about the malicious link, raising concerns due to EigenLayer’s popularity in the Ethereum ecosystem.
With over $11.1 billion in total value locked, EigenLayer has become a prime target for scammers. This recent compromise marks the second attack in October alone, following a previous incident involving the unauthorized sale of EIGEN tokens worth $5.7 million.
Despite the quick deletion of the initial post, the account continued to share malicious links disguised as legitimate airdrop campaigns. Users were misled by the nearly identical URLs, leading them to the fake EigenLayer blog address.
As EigenLayer remains vigilant against such attacks, the team reassured the community that the incidents were isolated and did not impact the protocol or its ecosystem. The compromised account did not expose any vulnerabilities in the protocol or token contracts, offering a sense of security to users moving forward.
