The Eigen Foundation recently announced a significant move to allocate 1% of the EIGEN token supply to the Protocol Guild, a group of core developers responsible for upholding the Ethereum layer-1 blockchain. With 180 members from 29 teams, the Protocol Guild plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and security of the Ethereum network.
EigenLayer, the staking protocol on Ethereum, enables users to restake assets such as Staked Ether and other tokens multiple times, providing additional yield opportunities for investors. This innovative approach has not only garnered praise but also raised concerns within the Ethereum community.
Restaking has emerged as a promising strategy to inject fresh capital into the crypto space, potentially creating a new asset class as it becomes a form of outsourced security for blockchain protocols and decentralized applications (DApps). By utilizing restaked assets for network security, protocols can reduce the barrier to entry for developers and DApps looking to secure their networks.
EigenLayer, with approximately $18.2 billion in total value locked (TVL), stands out as a prominent player in the restaking ecosystem, contributing significantly to the $26.9 billion TVL of restaking protocols. The rising popularity of EigenLayer propelled the EIGEN token into the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization in October, although it currently ranks 108.
In a recent development in November, EigenLayer expanded its restaking options to include Wrapped Bitcoin products, allowing users to earn yields by depositing uniBTC to the ARPA Network. This update further demonstrates EigenLayer’s commitment to fostering innovation and value creation within the decentralized finance landscape.
As the total value locked across the DeFi ecosystem approaches 2021 highs, driven in part by liquid restaking products and the growing popularity of wrapped Bitcoin instruments, EigenLayer continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of decentralized finance.
