Walking 10,000 steps a day is estimated to be worth up to $6.20 for an individual, potentially amounting to over $2,280 in a year. This groundbreaking research, conducted by academics from the University of Birmingham, sheds light on the economic benefits of physical activity.
Associate professor Mark Elliott, co-lead of the study, emphasized the importance of quantifying the financial value of physical activity. The initiative, launched by Sweat Economy, provided $60,000 in research grants to explore this concept further, aiming to create a new market around being active.
Co-founder Oleg Fomenko sees physical activity as a limited resource that could give rise to a new “movement economy,” akin to the attention economy. This new market has the potential to benefit not just individuals but also governments and employers.
Researchers from the University of Cádiz and the Caledonian University of Glasgow found that an active day could be worth $1.96 to governments, while the Hamburg-based Blockchain Research Lab discovered that employers could gain $4.38 in economic value per employee per active day.
