A recent attack on the Dogecoin network left 69% of its nodes crashing, all thanks to a critical vulnerability exploited by a hacker. Andreas Kohl, co-founder of Bitcoin sidechain Sequentia, revealed the startling news, claiming he used an old laptop in El Salvador to execute the attack.
Before the vulnerability was exploited, Dogecoin boasted 647 active nodes. However, after the hacker struck, only 315 nodes remained functional, as per data from Blockchair.
Kohl credited researcher Tobias Ruck for discovering the vulnerability that enabled him to cause the nodes to crash. This incident sheds light on the importance of cybersecurity within cryptocurrency networks.
Just weeks before this attack, an X account named “Department Of DOGE Efficiency” disclosed a vulnerability on the Dogecoin network that could have potentially brought down the entire chain. Referred to as the “DogeReaper” vulnerability, this flaw allowed users to remotely crash any Dogecoin node.
The potential consequences of this vulnerability were severe, with the account comparing it to a “Death Note” from the popular Japanese manga and anime series. By exploiting the vulnerability, anyone could write a node’s address and trigger a segmentation fault, halting the node’s operations.
While the severity of the vulnerability was initially deemed low by Coinbase, the potential for a complete network shutdown loomed large. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with digital assets and the importance of security protocols within the crypto space.
