A crypto trader recently made headlines after confessing to a $26 million loss in June due to a copy-paste error, describing the ordeal as “max pain.”
The trader, using the pseudonym qklpjeth, mistakenly transferred 7,912 Renzo restaked ETH (ezETH) to the wrong deposit address on June 19, resulting in the loss of $26.4 million. The tokens were locked away in a safe contract address, rendering them inaccessible for withdrawal.
When asked about the error, qklpjeth attributed it to a simple mistake, emphasizing the need for caution when copying and pasting addresses in the crypto world.
Despite the incident occurring months ago, qklpjeth recently sought help from white hat hackers on X after exhausting all conventional methods of fund recovery. The trader’s public plea was aimed at potential exploits of smart contract vulnerabilities to retrieve the lost assets.
Responding to qklpjeth’s call for assistance, the crypto community suggested reaching out to the Renzo protocol directly to modify the token contract. However, regulatory constraints prevented Renzo from intervening to recover the funds.
Harrison Seletsky, director of business development at SPACE ID, labeled the multimillion-dollar loss as a wake-up call for improved user experience and safety measures in the industry. Emphasizing the importance of preventing such errors, Seletsky underscored the need for robust security measures to protect user assets in the crypto space.
