Blockchain security firm Scam Sniffer has uncovered a new scam involving scammers using Telegram verification bots to inject crypto-stealing malware into systems, leading to the theft of private keys and compromising crypto wallets. In a recent report, the firm detailed how scammers are impersonating popular crypto influencers on X and luring users into malicious Telegram groups with promises of investment insights.
The fake verification bot, named “OfficiaISafeguardBot,” creates artificial urgency by asking users to verify their accounts within short windows, only to inject a malicious PowerShell code that downloads malware onto their systems. Scam Sniffer has observed numerous cases where this malware has resulted in the theft of private keys, causing users to lose significant amounts of cryptocurrency.
According to the security firm, this scam is evolving rapidly, with scammers adapting their tactics to impersonate others and trick users into running malicious code. This sophisticated infrastructure behind the malware indicates a growing trend of scams targeting crypto users through social engineering tactics.
Scam Sniffer has reported a surge in scammers impersonating influencers on X and spreading fake links and tokens to deceive users. On average, the firm has detected 300 impersonators a day this month, up from 160 in November. Victims have lost over $3 million by clicking on these malicious links and signing transactions from fake accounts.
In addition to this scam, other cybersecurity firms have warned of similar threats targeting Web3 workers with fake meeting apps to steal credentials and access crypto wallets. As the holiday season approaches, phishing attacks may increase, exploiting the rise in online transactions.
