A recent case involving an early Bitcoin investor from Austin, Texas, has shed light on the importance of reporting crypto capital gains. Frank Richard Ahlgren III, who has been investing in Bitcoin since 2011, found himself in hot water for failing to accurately report his earnings from selling around $4 million worth of cryptocurrencies between 2017 and 2019.
According to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), Ahlgren falsely underreported his capital gains from Bitcoin transactions. He initially purchased 1,366 BTC on Coinbase back in 2015 when Bitcoin was trading below $500. After selling about 640 BTC in 2017 at an average market price of $5,807.53, he reinvested the $3.7 million into real estate.
Authorities discovered inconsistencies in Ahlgren’s federal income tax returns for 2017, as well as unreported Bitcoin sales totaling over $650,000 in 2018 and 2019. In an attempt to hide the movement of funds, Ahlgren utilized various tactics such as multiple wallet transfers, crypto mixers, and cash transactions.
The Justice Department’s Tax Division, represented by Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart Goldberg, emphasized the severity of Ahlgren’s actions, which led to a two-year prison sentence. This case marks the first criminal tax evasion prosecution solely focused on cryptocurrency, highlighting the government’s increasing scrutiny of digital asset transactions.
Acting Special Agent in Charge Lucy Tan of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Houston Field Office emphasized their capability to track both crypto and fiat activities. Along with the prison term, Ahlgren has been ordered to serve one year of supervised release and pay $1.1 million in restitution to the United States government.
As the crypto industry continues to face regulatory challenges, investors are urged to accurately report their gains to avoid legal repercussions.
