Australia’s national financial intelligence agency, AUSTRAC, has identified cryptocurrency as a top priority for the upcoming year and is launching a task force to tackle potential money laundering activities by crypto ATM providers.
AUSTRAC CEO Brendan Thomas emphasized the attractiveness of cryptocurrencies for criminals due to their accessibility and quick, irreversible transactions. As a result, the task force will concentrate on ensuring that crypto ATM operators adhere to strict standards to prevent illicit cash flow through their machines.
Leading crypto ATM providers in Australia, such as Coinflip, Localcoin, and Cryptolink, are already required to register with AUSTRAC, monitor transactions, and implement KYC checks on users. Failure to comply with these regulations could result in significant financial penalties for operators.
With the increasing use of cryptocurrency, the risks of criminal exploitation also rise. AUSTRAC aims to eliminate non-compliant high-risk operations through its task force efforts. Violations of anti-money laundering laws in Australia can lead to severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and hefty fines.
Australia has emerged as the third-largest hub for Bitcoin and crypto ATMs, with a substantial increase in installations throughout the country. The market witnessed exponential growth in crypto ATM adoption towards the end of 2022, driven by private companies entering the sector.
By surpassing Asia’s Bitcoin ATM count in April 2023, Australia solidified its position as a significant player in the global cryptocurrency market. The United States holds the majority share of Bitcoin ATMs worldwide, followed by Canada. Source: Coin ATM Radar
