In a breakthrough development, Bitget has been granted a license to provide Bitcoin-related services in El Salvador. This significant announcement came on December 16, confirming that Bitget has obtained a Bitcoin Service Provider (BSP) license from the Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador. This license enables Bitget to offer a wide array of services connected to Bitcoin, such as fiat currency exchanges, payment solutions, and secure custody options for users within the country.

Bitget is eagerly awaiting additional regulatory approvals for a digital asset service provider license from El Salvador’s National Commission of Digital Assets. Once secured, this license will empower Bitget to extend its trading services to a variety of digital assets beyond just Bitcoin.

Min Lin, the chief business officer at Bitget, expressed his optimism about the potential of Latin America as a hotbed for crypto innovation and praised El Salvador for its bold move in embracing Bitcoin as legal tender. He highlighted the country’s role as a trailblazer in the crypto space, positioning it as a gateway for unlocking the full potential of digital currencies on a global scale.

Bitget boasts licenses as a virtual asset service provider in countries like Poland and Lithuania, with recent reentry into the UK market following compliance with local regulations. The exchange, headquartered in Seychelles, claims to have a vast user base of over 45 million globally and has even established a subsidiary in Vietnam. As per CoinMarketCap data, Bitget recorded a trading volume exceeding $6 billion in the last 24 hours.

This landmark license for Bitget in El Salvador coincides with the country’s recent amendments to its Bitcoin law. Reports suggest that El Salvador is currently in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a $1.3 billion loan, which may necessitate changes in local regulations to transition Bitcoin acceptance by businesses from mandatory to voluntary.

Notably, El Salvador made history by becoming the first country to adopt Bitcoin as a legal tender in September 2021 and has steadily been adding the cryptocurrency to its reserves. With a portfolio of 6,189 Bitcoin valued at over $602 million, El Salvador continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to digital assets.

In addition to its domestic initiatives, El Salvador is actively seeking to expand its global ties in the digital asset space. The country recently inked a collaborative agreement with Argentina on digital assets and is engaged in discussions with more than 25 other nations to forge similar partnerships aimed at promoting crypto adoption and regulatory frameworks worldwide.

With this latest development, Bitget’s entry into the El Salvadoran market heralds a new chapter in the country’s embrace of cryptocurrency, setting the stage for further advancements in the burgeoning crypto landscape.
