In a surprising turn of events, the long-defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox transferred a whopping $2.4 billion worth of Bitcoin to an unknown address shortly after Bitcoin skyrocketed past the $100,000 mark.
According to data from Arkham Intelligence, Mt. Gox initiated a transfer of 24,051 Bitcoin to an unfamiliar address with no prior history, starting with “1N7j” at 2:45 am UTC on Dec. 5. This transfer marks Mt. Gox’s first move since Nov. 12, coming just minutes after Bitcoin breached the $100,000 milestone and right before hitting a high of $104,000 on Coinbase.
The motive behind Mt. Gox’s sudden move remains a mystery, but similar actions in the past have hinted at forthcoming payouts to creditors. Despite the potential bearish impact on the market due to a flood of Bitcoin hitting circulation after a decade of dormancy, some analysts believe that the market has already factored in these payouts over the years.
Mt. Gox’s creditors, who can opt to receive their settlements in Bitcoin, have shown reluctance to offload their holdings en masse, indicating a potential bullish sentiment among the creditor community. The recent transfer leaves Mt. Gox with 39,878 BTC valued at around $4.1 billion, as reported by Arkham Intelligence.
The exchange’s trustee extended the repayment deadline to Oct. 31, 2025, citing incomplete procedures from some creditors still awaiting their reimbursements. With Mt. Gox resurfacing in the crypto conversation, the industry is bracing for potential shifts in the market dynamics.
