Byte Federal, a prominent Bitcoin ATM operator in the United States, recently faced a significant data breach that potentially impacted around 58,000 customers.
The Florida-based company reported the security breach to Maine’s attorney general on Dec. 12, revealing that unauthorized access had been gained to the personal information of its clients.
The breach was first discovered on Nov. 18, over 30 days after it occurred on Sept. 30. A cybercriminal exploited a vulnerability in third-party software to gain access to the sensitive data.
Although the incident prompted Byte Federal to halt its operations immediately, the company reassured its customers that their assets and funds were not compromised.
The breached data may have included names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, government-issued IDs, social security numbers, transaction details, and user photographs.
While there is no evidence of misuse, Byte Federal took proactive measures by resetting all customer accounts and upgrading its security protocols to prevent future unauthorized access.
In collaboration with cybersecurity experts, Byte Federal is conducting a forensic investigation to determine the cause and extent of the breach. Additionally, a legal inquiry is underway to address the situation.
Customers are advised to reset their login credentials, verify their personal data, and confirm their identities for added security.
Byte Federal, operating 1,356 Bitcoin ATMs in the US, constitutes 4.3% of the nation’s crypto ATM market. Despite this breach, the company continues to offer a convenient way for users to exchange fiat currencies for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin ATMs have gained popularity as an alternative to centralized exchanges, allowing users to seamlessly buy and sell digital assets.
As regulatory bodies like the US Federal Trade Commission warn of increasing scam incidents related to Bitcoin ATMs, it’s crucial for users to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions.
