The National Center for Public Policy Research, a renowned advocate for free markets based in Washington DC, has put forth a shareholder proposal to Amazon suggesting the adoption of a Bitcoin corporate treasury strategy at the upcoming April 2025 shareholder meeting.
In their proposal, the think tank highlighted the flaws in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as a measure of inflation, indicating that the true inflation rate could be significantly higher than the reported 4.95%. This discrepancy poses a threat to Amazon’s $88 billion in cash and short-term cash equivalents, potentially eroding shareholder value. To mitigate this risk, the National Center for Public Policy Research recommended that Amazon allocate at least 5% of its assets to Bitcoin, drawing inspiration from MicroStrategy’s successful Bitcoin treasury strategy.
MicroStrategy, led by founder Michael Saylor, has been instrumental in popularizing the corporate adoption of Bitcoin treasury strategies. The company’s impressive Bitcoin holdings, currently valued at over $40 billion, have yielded substantial profits and positioned them as a leader in this space.
Following MicroStrategy’s lead, mining company MARA and artificial intelligence firm Genius Group have also embraced Bitcoin treasury initiatives, further solidifying the trend among corporations and financial institutions.
As companies increasingly turn to Bitcoin as a hedge against currency debasement and inflation, the proposal from the National Center for Public Policy Research underscores the growing importance of cryptocurrency in corporate financial strategies. Amazon, with its massive cash reserves, stands to benefit from embracing this innovative approach to asset management, potentially safeguarding shareholder value in an uncertain economic landscape.
