State Auditor Andrew Sorrell of Alabama recently voiced his support for establishing a state Bitcoin reserve in a move to attract businesses and bolster financial stability. A long-time advocate of cryptocurrency, Sorrell believes that embracing digital currency is essential for the state’s economic growth.
In an interview with a local publication, Sorrell emphasized that “crypto is here to stay” and that states must position themselves to benefit from this emerging market. With the introduction of Bitcoin and Ether ETFs in the US, Sorrell sees an opportunity for Alabama to invest in these cryptocurrencies as easily as buying stocks through a brokerage.
Sorrell proposed that Alabama model its Bitcoin reserve after the Federal BTC reserve proposed by President-elect Donald Trump, suggesting monthly purchases over two years to build up the reserve. By diversifying away from the US dollar, the state can protect its finances against market fluctuations.
Alabama has seen a growing number of pro-crypto politicians at both the state and federal levels, indicating a favorable environment for cryptocurrency initiatives. Despite the bipartisan bill that aimed to safeguard digital asset storage and mining failing to pass, the creation of the Alabama Blockchain Study Commission in 2026 shows the state’s commitment to exploring crypto regulations.
With the rise of digital assets and the increasing acceptance of cryptocurrencies in mainstream finance, Alabama’s potential venture into the crypto market could position the state as a pioneer in the financial sector. Stay tuned for more updates on Alabama’s crypto journey.
