In a surprising move, the parliament of the Swiss canton of Bern voted to commission a report on Bitcoin mining feasibility. While the canton’s Government Council initially opposed the report and the concept of Bitcoin mining altogether, supporters of the motion are celebrating this decision as a major victory.
This groundbreaking report was put forward by the multiparty Bitcoin Parliamentary Group, comprised of 23 members. With a vote of 85 to 46, the report will explore potential sources of excess energy within the canton, the possibility of collaborating with Swiss Bitcoin miners, and how Bitcoin mining could contribute to grid stability.
The group drew inspiration from the US state of Texas, where Bitcoin mining has been successfully integrated into the region’s energy policy. By embracing Bitcoin mining, the canton of Bern aims to attract mining companies, create jobs, support renewable energy initiatives, and enhance grid reliability.
Despite facing opposition from the Government Council earlier this year, proponents of the report, including canton member of parliament Samuel Kullmann, remain optimistic about the future of Bitcoin mining in the region.
The Government Council’s concerns about energy use and international implications remain valid, but the supporters argue that Bitcoin mining could still be a valuable addition to the canton’s energy landscape. Moreover, recent developments in energy storage technology and the growing energy consumption from other data centers are changing the energy landscape rapidly.
Dennis Porter, a key figure in the Bitcoin industry, played a significant role in drafting the proposal for the report. Porter’s involvement highlights the growing interest and support for Bitcoin-related initiatives worldwide.
With Switzerland already being a hub for crypto enthusiasts and innovations, this move by the Swiss canton of Bern further solidifies the country’s position as a leading player in the crypto space. Stay tuned for more updates on the evolving crypto landscape in Switzerland and beyond.
