LEGO fans were in for a shock when a cryptocurrency scam known as “LEGO Coin” briefly appeared on the toy manufacturer’s homepage after it was hacked on Oct. 5. The scam promised unique rewards to those who purchased LEGO Coin, enticing many unsuspecting users to click the “Buy Now” button on the site.

However, vigilant LEGO enthusiast “ZTBricks” was quick to spot the scam and raise the alarm. Screenshots on social media revealed the deceptive promotion, leading users to a phishing site when they clicked on the link.

LEGO Group has not released any official statements regarding the incident, but reports suggest that the LEGO Coin message and the fraudulent link have been swiftly taken down from the homepage.

According to a report from Engadget, LEGO confirmed that the crypto scam only appeared briefly and that no user accounts were compromised in the process. Measures are being put in place to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The appearance of “LEGO Coin” on the LEGO website was short-lived, as it was removed approximately 75 minutes after it initially appeared. Moderators on the “lego” subreddit revealed that the scam showed up at 1:00 am UTC and was quickly removed at 3:00 am local time in Billund, Denmark, where LEGO’s headquarters are located.

While LEGO has not yet responded to requests for further comments, this incident highlights the importance of remaining vigilant against cryptocurrency scams that continue to plague online platforms.

In a previous hint at venturing into the NFT space, LEGO’s X account teased followers with a rotating 3D LEGO brick accompanied by the hashtag “#NFT.” Although the post was soon deleted, LEGO Group’s parent company, KIRKBI, made a significant investment of $1 billion in Epic Games in April 2022 to ramp up its plans for the Metaverse.

As the prevalence of cryptocurrency scams continues to rise, it is crucial for users to remain cautious and skeptical of enticing offers that seem too good to be true. Stay informed and always verify the legitimacy of businesses and promotions to protect yourself from falling victim to fraud.
