DOGS, a memecoin operating on The Open Network (TON), has announced its plan to donate over 6 billion tokens, valued at approximately $4.5 million, to nonprofit organizations globally. This charitable initiative follows the launch of a dedicated charity portal in late November.
The newly established platform enables registered nonprofit organizations worldwide to seek funding, showcasing DOGS’ dedication to allocating a substantial portion of unclaimed airdrop tokens towards philanthropic efforts.
“In the upcoming year, more than 6 billion DOGS tokens, which equate to $4.5 million presently, will be awarded to selected organizations after a meticulous approval process,” the team shared with Cointelegraph.
As part of this endeavor, a $150,000 collaboration with Best Friends Animal Society, a leading US-based nonprofit assisting homeless animals, has been unveiled.
“The partnership with Best Friends Animal Society serves as a rallying cry to the crypto community to work towards a future where every shelter achieves a 90% no-kill benchmark by 2025,” remarked DOGS founder Andrew.
Furthermore, DOGS will sponsor one month of care for adopted dogs through this partnership.
Inspired by Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov’s well-known dog illustration, the DOGS memecoin project emerged as a symbol of Digital Resistance and a TON rebrand post his arrest in France earlier this year.
The iconic dog symbol traces back to a notable event in Russia in 2011 when Durov was instructed to remove posts from liberal thinkers and dissidents.
DOGS token conducted a widely received airdrop that reached 17 million users in September. The DogsMini App on Telegram saw over 53 million users engaging, with roughly 42 million deemed eligible for the airdrop, aimed at enhancing crypto awareness on the messaging platform while advancing animal welfare causes.
DOGS’ beloved mascot, Spotty, has been designated as an ambassador for Best Friends Animal Society, set to make appearances at events and feature in marketing materials.
Originally conceived by Durov for a charity auction, Spotty has evolved into an emblem for The Open Network (TON).
While DOGS token swiftly soared to an all-time high of $0.0016 following its launch, disrupting TON temporarily, the meme coin has since experienced a 54.6% decline, with a further 4% drop observed today as memecoins witness a downturn.
